DESIGN 20 Workshop : Decision Making and Data in the Product Design Process

Data Driven Design is a design technique based on collecting and exploiting data for the optimization of the design process. It is in the digital sector that data is most commonly used to identify new opportunities, to optimize decision-making and to reduce development time.

In some sectors, such as the automobile industry, little used is made of data in this context. In the manner of the web, it would be particularly interesting to exploit data in the early phases of product design.

The purpose of the workshop is to determine the relevant data that could be used for a specific decision-making need in early design process. Decision Making & Data Driven Design will be studied from the point of view of each professions of the design process in order to understand how they can exploit properly data and how data can improve their communications.

The structure of the workshop was as following:

  • Introduction on Data Driven Design
  • Workshop on several examples
  • Discussions

The 26th of October 2020, the workshop was conducted in two parts. About 25 participants were present and attended. In a first step, the SIG Decision Making was introduced, the workshop theme and objectives were highlighted and then a brief state-of-the-art about Data-Driven Design in Product Development was presented. In a second step, the participants were invited to join an interactive online idea board on klaxoon.

The current world situation forces us to stay home and communicate virtually. It’s obviously a hindrance to communication, exchange and creativity during workshops. However in despite of these condition interesting ideas and discussions have taken place. The identified research leads seems promising and their further investigation should help design science to move forward. A research article summarizing this work is planned for 2021.

Bellow are one of the output of the workshop :
