24 July 2023 - DM SIG Workshop - Decision-making & Embedded Sensors : Improving the product design process

Throughout their lifecycle (figure 1), it is necessary to anticipate the relevant sensors and related services to be implemented in the early phases of product design. How to assess the potential value created by the integration of embedded sensors? This decision-making workshop aims to provide insights to help answer this question.

The assessment can be based on the triple bottom line, i.e. economic, environmental and social costs and benefits. However, it is difficult to assess quantitively during the early design phases, as little information about the product is defined. A generic model can help designers make initial qualitative assessment of the costs and benefits of potential value creation enabled by sensors. Figure 2 presents the proposed model.

The workshop will be divided into 4 successive sessions:

  1. An investigation of the criteria for assessing the embedded sensors value creation
  2. The experimentation of the proposed model / tool to support value creation evaluation
  3. Feedbacks on the model / tool in the form of a questionnaire
  4. A study of the results obtained through the usage of the model / tool.
